The HIV/AIDS Program provides consultation and continuing care of children with primary and acquired immunodeficiency. A dedicated telephone service is staffed by physicians with expertise in immunologic and infectious diseases to help referring physicians interpret results of immunologic laboratory tests, assist in evaluation of children's immune systems, assist with HIV testing including pre- and post-test counseling, and evaluate for the need for post-exposure prophylaxis for HIV. Program staff are available, as well, to provide education to physicians and the community about HIV/AIDS.
The immunology staff conducts the Family Program, which provides comprehensive care to HIV infected children and their families, including medical care, case management, and counseling. Currently members of the section are actively conducting research in mother-to-infant transmission of HIV, quality of life improvement, the pathogenesis of pediatric HIV infection, and clinical trials of new agents for treatment of HIV invection and opportunistic infections, including a vaccine.
