The Dialysis and Kidney Transplantation Center provides inpatient care, both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, home training, renal transplantation, and other services specifically for children.
A multidisciplinary team provides comprehensive patient care. The safety and comfort of the patient is always foremost, so whenever appropriate, the nephrology team will recommend a preemptive kidney transplant. This may often save years of dialysis and travel.
Members of the team include pediatric nephrologists, transplant surgeons, specially trained nurses, a nutritionist, social worker, psychiatrist, and Child Life therapist. This is especially important, since dialysis plays such a major role in the lives of the children and their families during the years of treatment. The social worker and the Child Life specialist become actively involved and respond to the child's educational, social, and emotional needs.
