Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy takes into account the special needs of young patients and uses purposeful activity to facilitate independence and functioning in children suffering from injury, disability, or chronic illness. In this pediatric setting, the focus is on development of movement as it relates to upper extremity/fine motor skills, perceptual and sensorimotor abilities, self-care, and social skills. Outpatient and inpatient treatment is provided upon physician referral. Extended weekday hours available by appointment. Developmental/neonatal evaluation and treatment The therapists offer: - Upper extremity evaluation and treatment (muscle testing, strengthening, re-education, coordination training, range of motion)
- Perceptual/sensorimotor assessment and interventions
- Self-care assessment and treatment (feeding, dressing, personal hygiene, functional communication and mobility skills)
- Splint fabrication and assistive devices to promote independence
- Scar management (evaluation and treatment by pediatric burn specialist, using custom-made pressure garments and devices, splints, and exercise)
- Feeding/dysphasia assessments and intervention
Children who may benefit from occupational therapy include those with the following problems: - Cerebral palsy
- Burns
- Hand injuries
- Orthopedic problems
- Neuromuscular disease
- Sensorimoto/perceptual dysfunction
- Spinal cord injuries or spina bifida
- Developmental problems
- Juvenile arthritis
- Amputations
- Developmental delay
- Failure to thrive
- Feeding problems
- Hypertrophic scars
- Brachial Plexis Injury
