Getting to Know Philadelphia

Philadelphia, the second-largest city on the East Coast, provides a wealth of activities to suit every taste. As the birthplace of our nation, it offers Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell among its historical attractions. As a cultural center, the city is home to the world-famous Philadelphia Orchestra, the Pennsylvania Ballet and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, as well as to opera, theater and science museums.

The city has major league sports teams for every season: Phillies baseball, Eagles football, 76ers basketball and Flyers hockey. Nightlife includes internationally famous restaurants, the lively atmosphere of jazz, comedy and rock clubs and seasonal entertainment at Penn's Landing, a riverfront park. Shopping is easy and interesting at the Gallery and in the many downtown shops and suburban malls.

The Philadelphia metropolitan area is a major health and educational center offering many educational and employment opportunities for the residents' family members. There are numerous colleges and universities offering outstanding bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs in many medically related fields and in diverse programs outside of medicine.

Beautiful Fairmount Park provides miles of biking and jogging trails and relaxing shaded areas for picnicking along the Schuylkill River. The Philadelphia Zoo is located within the park.

Philadelphia is well situated, with easy access to many points of interest in the Northeast. Conveniently located on the major air, rail and highway corridor of the East Coast, the city is only a short commute to New Jersey shore resorts or the Pocono Mountains. New York City and our nation's capital are within easy rail or driving distance.

Philadelphia is a city with wide ethnic diversity. And, while rich in historic traditions, it also prides itself on meeting the challenges of the future with vision and innovation.
