Stuart J. Hulnick Burn Center
The five-bed Burn Center provides the specialized care required by children suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. It is one of the only pediatric burn centers located between Boston and Washington, D.C. The team of specialists, including plastic surgeons, pediatric surgeons, pediatricians, nurses, social workers and other specially trained health care professionals, uses modern techniques not only to treat young burn victims but also to treat the emotional problems resulting from such injuries.
Cardiac Care Unit
The Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) is an intensive care unit dedicated solely to infants and children with congenital cardiac disease. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the Cardiothoracic Surgery Section, the Section of Cardiology and the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care provide care for critically ill patients following cardiac surgery. The eight-bed CCU is also staffed by registered nurses who specialize in the care of the pediatric cardiac patient.
Chevalier Jackson Special Care Unit
The 12-bed Special Care Unit (SCU) is staffed by pediatric residents and specially trained registered nurses. Each child has a primary attending and concurrent care by the critical care service. Many of the patients require airway maintenance and mechanical ventilation and have complex multisystem diagnoses. The Unit also serves children with acute problems that require a great intensity of care than the standard medical/surgical units provide. Long-term patients receive physical and occupational therapy to encourage normal development. Critical care faculty hold conferences regularly for residents rotating through the SCU.
Intensive Care Unit
The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has the resources to monitor and care for critically ill children. The eight-bed unit is staffed by pediatric critical care attendings, pediatric residents and pediatric critical care nurses who are supported by a wide range of pediatric and surgical subspecialists. In addition to the primary attending pediatrician or surgeon, medical direction and concurrent care are provided by the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care. Intensive care faculty hold conferences regularly for residents rotating through the ICU.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a 30-bed full-service facility. The Unit is staffed by neonatologists, neonatal-perinatal fellows, pediatric residents and specially trained registered nurses, who are prepared to handle any medical/surgical complication. The accessibility of consultation by pediatric specialists and subspecialists from St. Christopher's staff enhances patient care in the Unit. The NICU staff is also attuned to the needs of parents and can provide support, counseling and education. Neonatalogy faculty hold conferences regularly for residents rotating through the NICU.
