The Chevalier Jackson Special Care Unit (SCU) is a 12-bed intermediate care unit. This unit serves children who are critically ill. Each child has a primary attending and concurrent care by the critical care service. Many of these patients require airway and mechanical ventilation and have complex multisystem diagnoses.
The Unit also serves children with acute problems or whose complexity require a higher level of surveillance than that of a medical-surgical unit, including severe asthma, pneumonia, postoperative surgical patients, and exchanged transfusions. This unit accepts technology-dependent children with artificial airways, severe multisystem diseases requiring a high level of nursing care.
Child Life Services develops bedside and playroom activities that are appropriate for each patient. In addition, extensive parent teaching is provided in preparation for discharge.
