Children with cancer may be overwhelmed and frightened by the chemotherapy treatments they have to endure. Parents may need help in dealing with children who have autism or sleep difficulties. And many patients’ medical problems may be exacerbated by stress, which can result in headaches, depression or even suicidal impulses.
These are just a few of the many instances in which the dedicated physicians and staff in our Department of Child Psychiatry can make a world of difference in a child’s medical care. Our pediatric psychiatrists help children who are dealing with chronic pain, recovering in the Intensive Care Unit or struggling with various symptoms that have triggered visits to several physicians at multiple hospitals. They also work with neurologists to help determine whether certain symptoms are being caused by epilepsy, neurodegenerative disorders or family stress.
Misunderstanding or refusing to comply with medical regimens presents a unique concern in pediatric patients, especially in organ transplant recipients, adolescents with diabetes and children on dialysis. Our pediatric psychiatrists support effective treatment by addressing this issue and by caring for patients with acute and chronic medical or surgical problems in our pediatric ambulatory programs.
