The Speech and Hearing Department provides comprehensive diagnostic and (re)habilitative speech/language and audiology services for infants, children, and adolescents.
Speech pathologists evaluate and manage children who present with disorders such as speech or language delays, stuttering and speech/motor deficits. The speech pathologist is also an integral member of the Cleft Palate team.
Audiologic services include assessment procedures for children from birth to 21 years of age. Various testing methods include visual reinforcement audiometry, conditioned play audiometry, and conventional audiometry tests are chosen based on the developmental age and abilities of the child. Additional services include central auditory processing testing, brainstem auditory evoked response testing, otoacoustic emissions, hearing aid management, and an infant hearing screening program. The audiologists also coordinate and consult with the child's classroom teacher and hearing therapist.
Most children are seen on an outpatient basis, many in conjunction with ENT visit. Reports and recommendations are forwarded to the referring physician. Inpatients are evaluated at bedside, if necessary.
