The Trauma Program at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children has received a two-year accreditation from the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation, a non-profit organization, governing trauma centers in Pennsylvania.
“This accreditation reaffirms the value and importance of St. Christopher’s Trauma Program to Philadelphia and the surrounding communities, and underscores our commitment to treating children and educating families,” said Bernadette M. Mangan, Chief Executive Officer at St. Christopher’s.
St. Christopher’s became the third pediatric hospital in Pennsylvania to earn the designation of a Regional Level I Pediatric Trauma Center and the trauma team has cared for approximately 1,000 children with trauma-related injuries.
“Our highly specialized staff is committed to providing the best medical and surgical trauma care for children,” says Matthew Moront, M.D., Director of Trauma at St. Christopher’s. “Our program is a much-needed resources in the communities we serve and for those hospitals that refer patients to us.”
Common traumatic injuries seen at St. Christopher’s include pedestrian injuries and falls – injuries that are preventable. In addition to providing quality care for injured children, the trauma program will be focusing significant resources on reducing childhood injury through education, advocacy, and prevention efforts.
“Some trauma injuries may be predictable and preventable,” said Kerry Larkin R.N., BSN, CEN, Trauma Coordinator at St. Christopher’s. "Through education and outreach, we are working closely with children and parents to teach them how to play and live safely. Our focus this year is on reducing the childhood pedestrian injuries that are so prevalent in our community.”
