Allergy

The Section of Pulmonology and Allergy provides consultation, diagnostic evaluation and management of the wide range of chronic and acute respiratory diseases in children and adolescents.

DIVISION OF PULMONOLOGY

Excellent programs in the section include:

  • A large Cystic Fibrosis Centers with a special transition program to adult care
  • Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia Program
  • Chronic Home Mechanical Ventilation Program
  • Apnea Program, which focuses on the detection, causes and prevention of this breathing disorder

Comprehensive diagnostic and management services are available for patients with:

  • Asthma
  • Bronchiolitis
  • Bronchitis
  • Chest pain
  • Chronic cough
  • Congenital malformations of the respiratory tree, including thoracic wall defects
  • Congestion and wheezing
  • Respiratory complications of orthopedic and neuromuscular diseases
  • Pneumonia and Pleural effusions

A multidisciplinary team of health professionals is available to provide comprehensive care for each patient, on an outpatient or inpatient basis. The team includes pediatric pulmonologists, clinical nurse specialists, nutritionists, geneticists, respiratory and physical therapists, and social workers.

Diagnostic services on the premises include:

  • Advanced pulmonary function testing for infants, children and adolescents
  • Exercise testing and bronchoprovocation challenges
  • Fiberoptic endoscopy of the airway
  • Cardiopneumography and polysomnography
  • Sweat testing

In addition to the hospital office, Section members also provide services at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children Specialty Care Center at Broad Street, 231 North Broad Street in Center City Philadelphia. Appointments for either office can be made at 215-427-5183.

DIVISION OF ALLERGY

The Division of Allergy provides comprehensive consultative services, including immediate and long-term care, for the evaluation and treatment of children with a wide spectrum of allergic diseases.

The staff treats children with a variety of allergic conditions, including acute and chronic asthma, chronic cough, recurrent respiratory infections, allergic rhinitis, uticaria, and drug hypersensitivity. The staff has a special interest in bronchial asthma. Services for all age groups, including infants are:

  • Pulmonary function studies
  • Drug allergy testing
  • Food challenge studies
  • Insect allergy testing
  • Immunotherapy
