The fellowship program in Pediatric Anesthesiology is a one-year program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education ( ACGME). Dr. Roy Schwartz is the program director and can be reached at Roy.Schwartz@tenethealth.com .
The fellowship program’s mission is to prepare trainees for careers in academic or community based pediatric anesthesiology. Many of our former fellows are staff members of prestigious pediatric institutions.
The Department of Anesthesiology consists of 7 Staff Anesthesiologists, 1-2 Fellows, and 6 CRNAs. We have 2-3 Anesthesiology residents rotating from affiliated institutions. Our fellow’s experience is predominately in the operating room where there is a busy surgical service including: platics, orthopedics, ENT, ophthalmology, neurosurgery, and general pediatric surgery. Unique activities include a busy cardiothoracic surgery service, a burn service, level one trauma certification, and solid organ transplantation. The department administers approximately 7000 anesthetics per year.
Educational Goals and Objectives of Fellowship
The primary goal of the subspecialty program in Pediatric Anesthesiology is to provide fellows with maximum opportunities to contribute to optimal patient care while developing the knowledge, judgment, and skills expected of an academic Pediatric Anesthesiologist on the Medical Staff of a tertiary care children’s hospital. Fellows are expected to become proficient in the anesthetic care of neonates, infants, children, and adolescents undergoing a wide variety of surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures, as well as in pain management, regional anesthesia , and advanced life support. Fellows are also expected to develop capabilities in teaching, administration, and research to complement patient care.
To meet these goals, the program exposes fellows to a wide variety of clinical problems in pediatric patients. These goals are achieved through rotations of 8 months on the Anesthesia Service, 1 month on the Critical Care Service, 1 month on research, and 1 month on a related elective. Fellows have a progressively greater supervisory role in the Operating Room. They provide consultation, deliver lectures, and lead conferences under the supervision of faculty.

Fellows may conduct clinical research projects. Fellows are welcome to participate in ongoing research projects.
