HIV/AIDS
St. Christopher’s Hospital provides comprehensive care for pediatric and adolescent patients with HIV/AIDS, as well as care for their affected family members, through the Section of Immunology.
The section operates the Pediatric and Adolescent HIV/AIDS Program, which provides primary and specialty HIV/AIDS care for HIV exposed newborns, for HIV positive infants, children, and teens, and their HIV affected family members. Program staff are available to assist with questions involving the use of HIV testing in primary care settings, assistance with HIV positive post-test counseling, and for newly positive HIV patients.
Through Ryan White Funding, the program provides case management, mental health services, and assistance with negotiating the HIV/AIDS services available in the city. Active research protocols are available for patients desiring to participate. In addition, attending staff are available to provide education to health care providers and the community about HIV/AIDS, especially in topics around prevention and testing.
The immunology staff also conducts the Family Program, which provides comprehensive care to HIV-infected children and their families, including medical care, case management, and counseling. Currently members of the section are actively conducting research in mother-to-infant transmission of HIV, quality of life improvement, the pathogenesis of pediatric HIV infection, and clinical trials of new agents for treatment of HIV infection and opportunistic infections, including a vaccine.
