Cleft Lip and Palate
St. Christopher’s Section of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery uses advanced techniques that begin the process of correcting cleft and craniofacial deformities within the first year of a child’s life. Deformities treated are congenital, developmental and post-traumatic.
The cleft/craniofacial team at St. Christopher’s is multidisciplinary and encompasses the combined experience of plastic surgeons, neurosurgeons, oral surgeons, orthodontists, speech therapists, otolaryngologists and social service professionals. Specialists from the Section of Clinical Genetics and Dysmorphology and the Speech and Hearing Department also participate in the care of all of our cleft/craniofacial patients.
We provide a wide range of diagnostic, treatment and follow-up services, including:
- Cleft lip and palate repair
- Treatment of velopharyngeal incompetence (VPI)
- Reconstruction for craniosynostosis
- Surgery for complex craniomaxillofacial disorders (facial clefts, hemifacial microsomia, fibrous dysplasia and other disorders)
- Ear reconstruction and management of microtia (small ear deformity)
- Craniofacial dermoids
- Encephaloceles
- Vascular malformations
- Mandibular and maxillary tumors
- Maxillofacial trauma
- Neurofibromatosis
- Orthognathic surgery (Surgery of the jaws)
- Dental and orthodontic treatment to help align teeth and treat gum problems
- Speech and swallow therapy (treatment for speech and feeding disorders)
- Audiology (hearing testing)
- Distraction Osteogenesis
