Trauma (Regional Level I Trauma Center)
The mission of St. Christopher’s Trauma Center is to reduce death and disability for the children of our community by providing comprehensive trauma services from the moment of arrival through rehabilitation.
Our enhanced 24-hour services include:
- A fully staffed pediatric Emergency Department with coverage by board-certified pediatric emergency physicians, pediatric trauma surgeons and pediatric anesthesiologists
- Intensive Care Unit with board-certified specialists in pediatric critical care
- Specially trained pediatric neurosurgeons, orthopedic and plastic surgeons
- Radiology services including high resolution 64-slice Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
- The only pediatric hospital burn center in the mid-Atlantic region
- An in-house surgical team and a dedicated operating room suite
- Advanced laboratory capabilities allowing for availability of blood and blood products, and short turnaround time for lab testing
- Experienced social workers and child life specialists to assist families and comfort children in the Emergency Department
Our Trauma Center team, comprised of dedicated pediatric specialists, is committed to providing compassionate and individualized care for minor injuries through severe multi-system trauma cases.
In March 2003, St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children became the first institution in over a decade to receive initial verification as a Pediatric Regional Resources Center. We are one of four regional state-accredited Level I Trauma Centers that are capable of highly specialized treatment of the most critical injuries.
Transport Services
Patient transport is available 24 hours-a-day utilizing two pediatric ambulances, each staffed by a pediatric critical care nurse and/or EMT with training and expertise in transport medicine, including resuscitation and stabilization. Means of transport include ground, helicopter and fixed wing.
Trauma Education
In addition to providing comprehensive trauma services for patients, our trauma team also provides training to professionals. Presentations include:

- Management of Burns
- Resuscitation & Stabilization of a Child with Traumatic Injury
- Traumatic Brain Injury/Management of Head Injury
- Preparation of Pediatric Trauma Patients for Transport
- Site survey accreditation preparation
