Pulmonology & Allergy

St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children's Section of Pulmonology and Allergy provides diagnosis and treatment of respiratory disorders  of infants and children through innovative medical services, clinical research, and community outreach. We provide consultation, diagnostic testing and comprehensive management of diseases that affect the lung including asthma, cystic fibrosis, lung disease of prematurity, neuromuscular diseases, congenital lung diseases, sickle cell disease and sleep-disordered breathing.

The Section provides state-of-the-art pulmonary and allergy care across the full spectrum of respiratory and allergic diseases. The multi-disciplinary team includes pulmonologists, allergists, pulmonary nurse practitioner, specialty nurses, respiratory therapists, CF nurse coordinator, CF mental health psychologist, social worker and CF dietitian.

Major services within the section include:

  • The Cystic Fibrosis Center, which is accredited by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, provides complete interdisciplinary care for children with cystic fibrosis. In addition to providing long-term care to established patients, the center staff also provides evaluation for patients with suspected cystic fibrosis and those with positive results on the CF newborn screening. The CF Center also serves as a Therapeutic Development Research Center in which clinical trials of new therapies are performed.
  • The Sleep Center at St. Christopher’s provides both clinical evaluations by our sleep specialists as well as a four-bed sleep laboratory for overnight polysomnography studies and latest treatment options including non invasive ventilation.
  • The Airway Program provides a multi-disciplinary team  including pulmonologist and otolaryngologist approach to the diagnosis and treatment of airway abnormalities The Asthma Center combines the expertise of our allergists and pulmonologists and offers comprehensive evaluation and treatment for children with asthma.
  • The Home Ventilation Program offers care for technology dependent children requiring ventilatory support at home. The Home Ventilation Program provides comprehensive care through the combined efforts of pulmonologists, nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists and works in close collaboration with special needs pediatricians
  • The Sickle Cell Pulmonary Program provides evaluations and treatment of the pulmonary complications in children with sickle cell anemia.
  • Hermansky Pudlak Clinic offers multidisciplinary care including hematologist, pulmonologist, gastroenterologist in a highly specialized twice yearly clinic for this unique and extremely rare inherited genetic condition

Tests/Procedures

Pediatric Pulmonary Function Laboratory performs a wide array of diagnostic testing for, children, and adolescents, including:

  • Spirometry and whole body plethysmography
  • Bronchoprovocation testing
  • Exercise stress testing Sweat testing for cystic fibrosisState of art  flexible bronchoscopy is the direct examination of a child’s airways with a fiber optic camera,
    Sleep studies, or polysomnography testing, are performed in our four-bed, state-of-the-art sleep laboratory to evaluate for obstructive sleep apnea and other breathing disorders that can occur during sleep. We offer specialized services at our Sleep Center for a variety of sleep disordered breathing and for patients requiring non-invasive positive pressure ventilation such as Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) or other techniques.
