Pediatric Surgical Services

Pediatric General, Thoracic, and Minimally Invasive Surgery

The Division of Pediatric General, Thoracic, and Minimally Invasive Surgery at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children is staffed by board-certified pediatric surgeons who have extensive training in general surgery and pediatric surgery.  Our team of pediatric surgeons personally address the surgical needs of children of all ages and developmental stages, from extremely premature infants to 21-years of age, with a variety of conditions including infections, injuries, tumors, gastrointestinal disorders, endocrine disorders, chest wall abnormalities, lung abnormalities, and congenital malformations.

Conditions Treated Include:   

  • Gastroenterology: Liver cysts/masses, gallbladder disease, splenic problems, inflammatory bowel disease, appendicitis, hernias and umbilical problems
  • Urology/Gynecology: Circumcision, hydroceles, undescended testes, ambiguous genitalia, ovarian lesions, vaginal pathology
  • Head & Neck: Masses, abscesses, cystic hygroma, thyroid nodules, thyroglossal duct cysts   
  • Skin: Nevi, vascular malformations, lymphadenopathy, ganglion cysts, dermoid cysts, and other miscellaneous tissue masses
  • Breast: Masses, cysts, and infections 
  • Vascular Access: Tunneled central venous catheters, dialysis access, and infusaports
  • Non-Cardiac Thoracic Surgery: Chest wall, lung, and esophageal problems

Neonatal Surgery

We treat both elective and emergent congenital anomalies of premature and full term infants involving the neck, chest, abdomen, and groin including:

  • Emergent Procedures such as ECMO, emergent laparotomies for necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)
  • Correction of Congenital Malformations such as tracheoesophageal fistula, imperforate anus, intestinal atresias,  congenital diaphragmatic hernias, congenital lung anomalies

Pediatric Oncology

We work cooperatively with pediatric oncologists to diagnose and treat tumors of the thorax, abdomen, and pelvis, including neuroblastoma, Wilms’ tumor, hepatoblastoma, and rhabdomyosarcoma. 

Non Cardiac Thoracic Surgery

In addition to congenital lung lesions, we treat spontaneous pneumothoraces, thoracic empyemas, mediastinal or thoracic masses, and repair of chest wall abnormalities, like pectus excavatum and carinatum often using minimally invasive techniques.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

We are among the leaders in the field of minimally invasive thoracoscopic and laparoscopic procedures for the treatment of pediatric surgical diseases.

Pediatric Trauma

Through our Level 1 Trauma Center, all of our surgeons are certified in ATLS and PALS and are trained to care for critically ill infants and children who are victims of blunt or penetrating trauma.

Elective Pediatric Surgical Issues

The majority of our activities revolve around caring for the elective surgical needs of infants and children. Our surgeons are skilled in head and neck surgery, endocrine surgery, thoracic surgery, gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary surgery, gynecology, and most general urologic surgery.
