Medical Transportation

St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children’s Critical Care Transport Team

When a child’s life possibly hangs in the balance, there is no time to lose. For more than two decades, St. Christopher’s has provided transport services for critically ill neonatal and pediatric patients who need the intensive care or other specialized capabilities only a pediatric hospital offers.

St. Christopher’s pediatric Critical Care Transport Team provides resuscitation, stabilization and inter-facility transfer of patients ranging from neonates to teenagers requiring care and treatment for a variety of medical and surgical diagnoses. These can include, but are not limited to, trauma, congenital heart disease and burns.

St. Christopher’s transport team serves all critical areas, including the Neonatal, Cardiac and Pediatric Intensive Care Units, the Level I Regional Trauma Center and Verified Burn Center. The Transport Team performs more than 2,600 transports in the tri-state region via ambulance and helicopter each year.

Interdisciplinary Team

The Transport Team is led by a Medical Director, Nurse Manager and Educator. The team is comprised of nurses and paramedics who have expertise in pediatric and/or neonatal intensive care, pediatric emergency nursing, trauma and critical care transport. Their certifications include Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Emergency Medical Technician- Paramedic (EMT-P), and Pre-Hospital Registered Nurse (PHRN).

Every year, each team member must complete both written and clinical simulation competency evaluations with the Transport Medical Director and a Critical Care attending physician. This helps ensure that high quality care is received by all children.

In a transport situation, the referring physician may speak directly with the medical command physician and receive recommendations for patient management until the team arrives. And during the transport, the team communicates directly with the medical command physician to discuss management and disposition. Depending on the nature of the case, the medical command physician may be a pediatric emergency physician, pediatric intensivist or neonatalologist.
