Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a chronic disease that causes thick mucus to develop, making breathing and digesting food properly difficult.

The Cystic Fibrosis Center at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children uses a family-centered, interdisciplinary approach to provide your child with advanced, collaborative care for treatment of CF. At St. Christopher's, your child's team of professionals may include pediatric pulmonologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, dietitians, research coordinators and social workers. These pulmonary specialists work together and with you to help enhance your child's health and quality of life. Your child's team will also work closely with your child's primary care doctor to ensure they're integral partners in your child's medical care.

You can feel confident knowing that St. Christopher's Cystic Fibrosis Center is a Therapeutic Development Center working closely with the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. And St. Christopher's Pulmonary Function Laboratory is accredited by the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and functions under the guidelines of the American Thoracic Society. St. Christopher's also shares an affiliation with the Drexel University College of Medicine Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program at Hahnemann Hospital in order to better transition those living with cystic fibrosis from childhood to adulthood.

About Cystic Fibrosis

One of the most common inherited conditions, cystic fibrosis occurs in 1 of every 3,500 newborns. It's found most frequently in the Caucasian population, but can affect all races and ethnicities. Although there is no cure for cystic fibrosis, children are being identified sooner, living longer and leading healthier, more productive lives well into adulthood due to early treatment and aggressive medical care.
