Message from Our CEO

J. Mark McLoone, FACHE

I'm excited to be part of St. Christopher's Hospital for Children family as the Chief Executive Officer at such a remarkable time. Every day I strive to help make the hospital grow and better serve you, our patients, families, incoming medical students, residents and fellows, volunteers, and clinical and ancillary staff.

I came to St. Christopher's with more than 30 years of healthcare management experience, most of which has been in children's hospitals. I have held positions at Mercy Hospital in Wilkes-Barre, PA; served as Vice President at Albert Einstein Medical Center, where the pediatric department was a part of my responsibilities; was the Chief Operating Officer for the DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, DE; served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Children's Hospital at OUMC (the University of Oklahoma's pediatric teaching hospital) where I was simultaneously a Chief Operating Officer of the roughly 800 bed, three hospital campus; and my most recent children's hospital leadership position before joining St. Christopher's was as Chief Executive Officer at the Methodist Children's Hospital in San Antonio, TX.

While I'm still fairly new to St. Christopher's, Philadelphia is not new to me. I was born in North Philadelphia and earned my bachelor's degree from LaSalle University and my MBA degree from St. Joseph's University. I love this city and St. Christopher's has always had a special place in my heart.

If you've been to St. Christopher's, you know that our family here treats you like a part of their own. We provide high-quality, family-centered care with a personal touch. From our nurses to physicians to our ancillary staff, you can be sure that we will always welcome our patients and their families with a warm greeting and will do our best to provide the most comprehensive and personal care possible. That means we're not only here to do our job and keep your children healthy, but we're also here to support you just as a friend or family member would. This isn't a new atmosphere -- we've been providing that exceptional care since 1875.

Last November, the hospital turned 140 years old. We have an amazing history that I encourage you to learn more about. Some industry-changing physicians have helped shape St. Christopher's, including Dr. William H. Bennett who founded St. Christopher's, Dr. Waldo E. Nelson, who authored what is widely-known as THE pediatric textbook, and Dr. Angelo DiGeorge, who discovered DiGeorge Syndrome.

Currently, we're a 189-bed hospital that not only serves the children in the immediate Philadelphia area, but also throughout the Delaware Valley. We have a full range of pediatric subspecialists who are experienced in their areas and dedicated to the children we serve. Some of our highly-acclaimed programs include the highest level of pediatric trauma care and neonatal care, Oncology unit and the only dedicated pediatric burn center in the region. St. Christopher's also has one of the busiest emergency departments for children in the country, with over 70,000 annual visits.

As a teaching hospital, St. Christopher's has affiliations with Drexel University College of Medicine, Temple University School of Medicine, and Albert Einstein Medical Center. We're working hard each day to help train the next generation of professionals in pediatric medicine.

In April, we opened the Critical Care Tower, which is home to a brand new neonatal unit, expanded dental unit, a larger gym for physical and occupational therapies and more. In addition to our main hospital location, we also have six specialty satellite centers throughout PA and NJ, four general pediatric offices in PA, and a pediatric urgent care center in Abington, PA. In 2014, we opened our Center for the Urban Child, which provides children with comprehensive services to help break the cycles of food insecurity, violence, and childhood illness.

We recently achieved Magnet re-designation, which is the highest honor a hospital nursing program can receive. (And if you've been to St. Chris, you know how phenomenal our nurses are. In fact, you probably have a favorite few who you can brag about). Our hospital was also recently honored as a Top Children's Hospital by The Leapfrog Group, which recognizes hospitals for quality and patient safety. St. Christopher's was the only pediatric hospital in the state to receive this award and one of only nine pediatric hospitals nationally to receive this designation.

It's a great time to be at St. Christopher's and in Philadelphia. I'm honored to be here as we embark on new adventures and medical breakthroughs, as we continue to grow, and as we develop even greater ways to continue to serve our patients and families with the best care possible. Welcome to our St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children family. We are pleased that you have joined us!
