Child Protection Program

At St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children we are committed to making sure that every child receives comprehensive, compassionate medical care in a nurturing, safe environment.  Nowhere is this commitment more evident than in our Child Protection Program.  Since 2004, the Child Protection Program has been serving child victims of abuse and neglect.  We have provided comprehensive medical evaluations for thousands of children with the goal of providing a first step in healing for the child and their family.

Guiding Principles

Our goal is to provide the highest quality of care to victims of child abuse and neglect, while minimizing further trauma, by providing compassionate care and psychosocial support in a nurturing environment as a first step toward healing for the child and family.

Our Services

The Child Protection Program provides consultation, as well as education, to medical providers both at St. Christopher’s Hospital and throughout the region.  We offer outpatient sessions in the Center for the Urban Child, inpatient consultations, and 24/7/365 telephone consultation service.  Since 2016, we have also been providing services at the local Children’s Advocacy Center, Philadelphia Children’s Alliance.

We work collaboratively with local community agencies that work with victims of abuse, including the Philadelphia Department of Health and Human Services (DHS), Philadelphia Children’s Alliance (PCA), behavioral and mental health agencies, law enforcement and district attorney’s offices, in order to improve communication and thereby improve the services to children and their families who have been victims of abuse.

Our specialists use evidence-based protocols when evaluating children in whom there is concern for abuse and neglect in order to identify injuries and treatment needs, and to help prevent the misdiagnoses of child abuse.

In addition, our team  members actively seek ways to prevent child maltreatment. For example, our Children’s and Mom’s Program (CAMP) works with providers to identify and help victims of domestic violence, in an effort to improve lives and prevent child abuse and neglect. Our on-site Intimate Partner Violence specialist from Lutheran Settlement House provides services to families to make a safer environment for our children.
