Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center
The Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary program dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of children with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The Center’s multidisciplinary team of digestive health specialists works together to provide expert diagnosis and state-of-the-art medical and surgical interventions. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) face unique challenges. We personalize ongoing care to help patients manage their condition. We have an interest in contributing to research as we evaluate different treatments, analyzing risk for complications, prognosis and quality improvement.
Gastroenterologists direct the team of specialists, which unites surgeons, pediatric registered dietitians, radiologists, mental health professionals, pathologists and nurse practitioners. Team members conduct multidisciplinary conferences to discuss patients’ treatment and progression. We work closely with both patients and referring physicians to establish a coordinated care plan designed to offer the best results.
Patient education and support are important. Patients need to understand their disease, assess their treatment options in order to participate in their treatment decisions and feel in control of their disease. We are committed to open lines of communication and providing ongoing information and resources to families through discussions and support groups. Families and patients will receive educational materials and up-to-date information regarding IBD diagnosis, treatment options and current research. We also have providers that sit on the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America Medical Advisory Board.
In IBD disease severity can range from mild to severe. No matter how severe your child’s disease, our objective is the same as yours - to enable children with IBD lead a normal life. With high quality medical care patients can lead healthy, active lives. We work closely with adult gastroenterologists to provide a smooth transition of care as your child enters adulthood.
The IBD Center physicians, nurses and registered dietitians can be contacted for questions during business hours. A pediatric gastroenterologist is available 24-hours-a-day for emergencies. As we strive to provide the best care for current and new patients we provide timely access to patients with possible IBD for a comprehensive evaluation.
For IBD Center Medical Director Philip Stein, MD, providing high quality care for IBD patients is a not just a job, but a true personal passion. Being diagnosed as a teenager with Crohn’s disease, Dr. Stein is familiar with the avalanche of feelings and thoughts that illness and treatment inevitably generate. As someone who has lived with IBD symptoms, undergone multiple medical procedures and taken numerous medications, Dr. Stein has a strong connection to the children he treats. Patients and parents often feel relieved in talking with someone that speaks with both personal experience and medical knowledge. As a physician, he is motivated to improve the quality of life for children with IBD so they can benefit from his experience as a doctor and a patient.
