Concussion/Traumatic Brain Injury Program
St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children’s Traumatic Brain Injury/Concussion Program evaluates and treats children and adolescents who have sustained concussions and other mild head injuries. We strive to provide high-quality, multidisciplinary care, counseling and education for family members, doctors, coaches and athletic directors on the current management of traumatic brain injury and concussions.
All concussions aren’t created equal. At St. Christopher’s, your child will receive a comprehensive evaluation to assess cognitive dysfunction potentially affected by a concussion (e.g., attention, memory, speech, etc.). Specialists involved in your child’s care may include neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuropsychologists, radiologists and physical therapists. Following a comprehensive evaluation, a treatment plan will be developed to deal with learning and behavioral issues and to make referrals to appropriate educational, rehabilitation, behavioral health and other medical specialists.
St. Christopher’s offers ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) for teenage athletes. While the ImPACT test can be used as part of the medical management of concussions, St. Christopher’s also recommend that young athletes receive pre-testing before playing contact sports. The test only takes 20 minutes using a video-game format and gives doctors valuable data about your child’s verbal and visual memory, processing speed and reaction time. This baseline information can be used to look for changes after a possible head injury.
If you’re the parent of a child age 12 or older, schedule a baseline ImPACT test today. The test uses a video-game format that appeals to children. Test results are used to ensure the child receives appropriate treatment and determine when it’s safe for the child to return to sports after a head injury.
